/2025 RV Masters State Championships
Almost perfect conditions in Nagambie most of the time for the VIC Championships where HRC was represented by a large contingent of Masters rowers, coxes and supporters, with great efforts from all.
Thank you to Vic who organised the trailer so expertly, and to Vic and Bill who towed the trailer. Thank you to Natasha, Fiona and JB for undertaking BRO duties. If you havenβt yet obtained your BRO certificate, the winter season would be a good time to achieve this. Thank you to Tristan for his planning and organising and for providing support on Saturday. Congratulations to all our single scullers, including the great Alan Purton who is an inspiring octogenarian, taking on three races on Saturday. Congratulations also to all our medal winners - there were some great results across the board.

ANZAC Ceremony at HRC
As we observed a national day of remembrance for all Australians and New Zealanders who have served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations, we specifically remembered our club members who sacrificed and gave service, by holding the annual HRC ANZAC ceremony and club row on Sunday 27th April.
ANZAC Races
Sunday, April 27th marked a special day for HRC as we gathered for our annual ANZAC club races and service, and the christening of the newest addition to the fleet. The day kicked off with our traditional club races. The assembled rowers demonstrated impressive skill and determination, with over 50 participants joining across a range of sweep and scull boat classes and with visitors from both Power House RC and Wentworth RC. The day's fastest crew was an imperious 4X- stroked by none other than champion rower and Big-V Rep Shane O'Connor-Smith. But of course, the real win was seeing members row in scratch combinations in such fine form.
HRC was pleased to be joined by rowers from Power house and wentworth
rowers and coxes came together in scratch crews to row in fine form
ANZAC Procession and Service
Following the races, we gathered for a procession to HRC's war memorial, ably led by piper Nick Buckley (son of member Sandra). The service that followed was a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by all service members during and since the Great War, notably those from HRC who fought and fell in those conflicts, and whose names can be found inscribed on the memorial. A special thank you to Jim Dewar (honorary member and Vietnam veteran) for leading us in our reflection. A wreath was jointly laid by the President and Club Secretary Frances Graham, who had kindly also prepared such a fitting wreath for the occasion. Members were then invited to lay their own individual poppies on the cenotaph in the memory of those who made the greatest sacrifice.

The procession was led by talented old scotch piper Nick Buckley - son of member Sandra. The clubβs memorial was erected in October 1919 to honour our fallen WW1 members, and is one of the first and oldest Anzac memorials in Australia.

Naming of the Ned Coleman 2XOn such an important day in the HRC calendar, it seemed appropriate to christen the newest addition to the fleet, a Filippi racing 2X (rated 65-75kg). This boat will provide an option for our elite female and lightweight athletes to compete in, following on from the summer's success in the NSW championships and in line with the club's ambitions. In naming this boat, the club captain and committee sought to draw on the club's (relatively recent) history of success at a national level, and one athlete stood out: Ned Coleman. For those who have joined HRC in the last 10 years, a brief summary of Ned's accolades includes:
Bronze at 2016 Nationals MU192X
Silver at 2016 Nationals MU194X
Silver at 2015 Nationals MU192X
Gold at 2014 Nationals MU174X+
Silver at 2014 Nationals MU172X
After HRC, Ned competed with MUBC whilst coaching juniors at Hawthorn and going on to more successes. Ned was the first of several talented home-grown rowers from the club's junior program and neighbouring public schools. Subsequent athletes you will be familiar with include Tristan Krstevski (Club Captain), Charlie Watts (Banks, and HRC club coach), Jackson Morish (Mercs, and HRC club coach), and Max Currie (HRC committee & coach). It was fantastic that Ned could join us all the way from Swan Hill, and be honored with his family including sister Annie and mother Josie (also great contributors to Victorian rowing) in the audience. Josie was instrumental in the HRC/Balwyn High School partnership's inception, as well as the Girl's Head of the River.
Ned was the first of several talented home-grown rowers from the club's junior program which continues successfully to this day
Morning Tea
All that was left then to do was enjoy the fine spread of treats provided by members, and assembled and presented by the ever-generous-with-their-time Robyn Blake and Frances. Thank you to all of those who joined us for this important tradition, and I hope to continue to see strong turnouts at our social club racing in the coming months. All are welcome, and we try to mix up the crews so that everyone from Learn to Row to our Youth Elites can experience the intensity of a good race but also the camaraderie of HRC.

Winter Rowing
If you plan on rowing early in the morning or past 5pm, please make sure you have lights on your boat. No lights, no row!
Working Bee - Sunday 18 May at 10.30am
May is 'maintenance month' and there are plenty of jobs we would welcome the assistance of our members with please. Jobs will range from simple repairs/maintenance of boats e.g. replacing wheels on seats, through to cleaning of guttering (where it is accessible and safe to do so). We will assign jobs on the day so please come prepared i.e. it is recommended that you bring as a minimum some gloves and some may like to bring gardening or maintenance tools. Join us at 10:30 after Rowing Development for some hard work, some fun and some morning tea - please bring a plate to share.
Trivia Night - Saturday 24 May
This is an opportunity to grab your oar-some friends (tables of 10) and join us as we navigate through an evening of brain-teasing questions and good times to be led by our very own trivia maestro JB. Don't miss the boat on what promises to be an enjoyable fun-filled evening. Future emails to follow will provide a run-down for the evening but in the meantime please mark this event in your diaries.
Classes of Rowing Boats
For those who are new to rowing, it can be confusing trying to understand all the different boat class symbols at regattas. So we asked Guy Besley, HRCβs resident coxing expert, for a quick guide.
Rowing boats come in various types, each designed for specific purposes and conditions. Here are some of the different types of rowing boats:
Single Scull (1x): A single scull is a narrow, long boat designed for one rower who uses two oars, one in each hand. This type of boat is used for competitive rowing and provides the rower with full control over the boatβs direction. A Single scull can be either a racing hull or a tub hull the tub is designed for novice rowers as it is wider and easier to sit up. Its believed that single sculling is a great way for rowers to gain balance and a true understanding about making a boat move through the water. Thee is nowhere to hide on race day either, you are 100% accountable.
Double Scull (2x): Similar to the single scull, a double scull is designed for two rowers who each use one oar. It is often used in competitive rowing events, and the coordination between the two rowers is crucial for success.
Pair (2+/-), sweep rowing: A pair is a rowing boat for two rowers who each use one oar. A pair can be either coxed or un-coxed, although it is very rare to see a cox in a pair these days except in tubs training novices. It requires teamwork and synchronization between the rowers. Pairs are often used in competitive rowing. A pair is considered one of the most challenging and technical boats to row.
Four (4+/-) sweep rowing: A four is a boat for four rowers who each use one oar. There are two types of fours: coxless fours (without a coxswain) and coxed fours (with a coxswain who steers and directs the crew). Fours are commonly used in both competitive rowing and recreational rowing.
Quad Scull (4x+/-): Probably my favorite boat class to row. A quad scull is same as a double scull except with four rowers, it maybe coxed (usually with the coxswain sitting in the bow, or uncoxed.
Eight (8+): An eight is a large rowing boat for eight rowers who each use one oar. It also has a coxswain who provides direction and commands. Eights are commonly used in competitive rowing, particularly in team rowing events like eights races and regattas.
Coastal Rowing Boats (various classes): Coastal rowing boats have grown in popularity through Europe over the last few years, in my view they will explode in Australia as soon as someone gets behind it and promotes. The class is ideal for Australian conditions and allows Surf rowers the opportunity to adapt to a truly international class of rowing whilst also allowing an opportunity for older rowers to take on new challenges and experiences. Very similar to the explosion of growth in Trail running, Gravel Riding and Of Road Triathlons. Basically they are a bigger boat, much more stable and come in single scull, double scull and coxed quad sculls. Watch this space!!!!
Adaptive Rowing Boats: These rowing boats are modified to accommodate individuals with disabilities, allowing them to participate in the sport of rowing. Adaptations can include specialized seats, supports, or equipment to suit the needs of the rower.
Its also worth noting all classes have male or female divisions and many also have mixed divisions, meaning half women and half men.
These are just a few examples of the various types of rowing boats available. The choice of boat depends on factors such as the intended use, the number of rowers, the water conditions, and personal preferences, mainly focused on whether your training, racing or just having some fun.
Also note that on the event schedules, it may all look a little confusing; below is a guide to help you navigate through.
Head of the Yarra 2025
22nd November - with just under 7 months before this yearβs Head of the Yarra itβs time for a club update.
Entries for interstate and overseas crews opened in April and have reached their cap of 200 boats. A great mix of crews from across Australia and New Zealand. Victorian crew entries will open on 4th August and their cap of 80 will fill quickly. So, we are all set for a large entry on Saturday 22nd November.
Orange army
The Orange Army of volunteers is an essential ingredient of HOTY. There are jobs for club members, friends and mates from other clubs. Itβs a lot of fun and competitors and spectators are always grateful and impressed - so your help will make a big difference! Please ensure you get your name down via our HOTY volunteer site - Click Here
hoty sponsors
Sponsors - we need your help to bring them on board.
The Head of the Yarra relies on the financial and in-kind support of sponsors, some of whom have been long term and close associates (if not, members) of the club. We are deeply indebted to them and greatly appreciative of their consistent support.
We want to ask our HRC member base if they have an association with any organisation that could be a potential sponsor for the 2025 Head of the Yarra event? It might be a business you work in, one you know closely, or an organisation to which you can make a first hand introduction. We are seeking sponsorship outcomes that add positively to the sponsor, HRC and to the race participants experience through effective activation at the event.
Simon Watts is our sponsor contact and heβd be appreciative of any first-hand leads. Not so much a βhave you thought ofβ¦?β but βI can introduce you toβ¦β type of leads and contacts.
Simon can be reached on email at swatts792@gmail.com or call 0418 791 679

HOTY Podcasts
How lucky are we to have Guy Besley at HRC and his wonderful Coxswainβs Journey podcasts on Spotify and Facebook. Guy has volunteered to put together some podcasts in the lead up to HOTY to help crews prepare for what is a hugely challenging physical and tactical 8km race. Itβs more than just fitness. Diet, clever coxing and a deliberate prep routine will see you through. Miss some of these ingredients and you may not enjoy the event as much as you should. Itβs all part of our safety plan for 2025.
quality beer with a label and a look that your friends will love
Last drinks for HOTY24!
Now you all know that there are still about 30 slabs of the Crew Brew that need drinking. The notice is on the wall at the club. $50 on the Tyro machine on the bar. Just do it!
hoty 2025 will be amazing with your help!
Thatβs it for the HOTY25 update.
Remember your contribution is critical to our iconic event. Put your name down via the link above and Natasha will match you up to one of our volunteer activities.

Australian Rowing Championships 23-30th March
Congratulations to our youth squad who competed at the magnificent Lake Barrington in Tasmania. Accompanying the scenic views, was action packed rowing by the squad. This has been the first all-Hawthorn crew who has medalled at the National Championships for at least the 50 years. On top of that, Max was apart of the winning eight in the Interstate Regatta (which is ran concurrent with the National Championships) to bring the Noel Wilkinson trophy back to Victoria! Hopefully its the first of many more Hawthorn medals!
