We’re a hands-on club, so members are expected to pitch in, especially during our biggest annual event, Head of the Yarra (held each November).
Why Hawthorn Rowing Club?
Founded in 1877, Hawthorn Rowing Club is one of the oldest clubs affiliated with Rowing Victoria, with a legacy anchored on the Yarra beneath the Hawthorn Bridge.
Today, we offer programs for all levels — from juniors to adults, beginners to elite development.
However, Hawthorn Rowing Club is much more than a rowing shed.
It’s a place where countless people have learned to row, won their first medal, rehabilitated, found love, made lifelong friends, and discovered what they’re made of.
We’re a volunteer-run, tight-knit community built on real connection, a shared love of the sport, and the spirit of showing up for others, and ourselves. Our members don’t row — they belong, grow, and support one another across every season of life.
If you’re looking for more than just a place to train, (and you value authentic connection, personal challenge, and a vibrant, welcoming culture), you’ll find it here.

There’s a pathway for everyone
Whether you’re touching an oar for the first time or returning after a break, Hawthorn Rowing Club offers a clear and supportive pathway to help you grow.
We start with a Coach Consult — a 1:1 meeting with one of our coaches to understand your goals, confidence, and technical skill.
From there, we tailor your next steps
Learn to Row is our beginner-friendly entry point for those brand new to the sport
Return to Row helps experienced rowers ease back into rhythm after time away
Progress Squad is where rowers build upon their skills, grow confidence, and explore the different boats and configurations rowing offers (sweep, scull, big boats, small boats)
Development Squad is for those ready to train seriously, refine technique, and prepare for racing and competition
Social Squad is perfect for those who want to row casually and stay active while enjoying the community
Our approach is flexible, coach-supported, and rooted in community. Whether your goal is fitness, fun, or fierce competition, there’s a place for you at HRC.

FAQs
How long is the membership for?
Membership is paid in advance for a 12 month period on July 1 of each year.
We bill on a pro-rata basis, so if you join in December, you’ll pay for the remaining months until June 30 the following year.
What is the cancellation policy?
If you decide the club is not working out for you, we first meet with you to better understand why and seek to help you find a suitable pathway. If it’s just not working out, we will explore cancellation and a refund of the remaining months of your membership on a case-by-case basis.
Can I get coaching included in my membership?
Our coaches are qualified Rowing Australia coaches, and are valued members of our club. They are available for private coaching sessions at additional cost. Payment is made directly to them, and prices may vary depending on the coach, duration, and type of training session.
