2025 RV Masters State Championships

Almost perfect conditions in Nagambie most of the time for the VIC Championships where HRC was represented by a large contingent of Masters rowers, coxes and supporters, with great efforts from all.

Thank you to Vic who organised the trailer so expertly, and to Vic and Bill who towed the trailer. Thank you to Natasha, Fiona and JB for undertaking BRO duties. If you haven’t yet obtained your BRO certificate, the winter season would be a good time to achieve this. Thank you to Tristan for his planning and organising and for providing support on Saturday. Congratulations to all our single scullers, including the great Alan Purton who is an inspiring octogenarian, taking on three races on Saturday. Congratulations also to all our medal winners - there were some great results across the board.

2025 Geelong Masters Regatta

A beautiful autumn day saw us enjoying the Barwon River at its finest. Thank you to Natasha, Tessa, Alexis, Olesia, Bill, and Alan for their excellent coxing, which was greatly appreciated by all crews. Thank you also to Vic and Bill for towing, and to Olly for his well-thought-out trailer plan.

Congratulations to Chloe and Alexis, who raced singles for the first time—always an impressive achievement that is well respected by fellow rowers. Well done to Albert, who raced for the first time—welcome to the racing squad!

Thank you to Vic for running the day so smoothly, as well as taking on the BRO duties, and to Simon for his coaching and ongoing advice throughout the day, not to mention the many helpful videos. Thank you to Peter for also undertaking BRO duties, and to Tristan and Simon for devising a regatta plan that successfully included everyone who wanted to compete.

ANZAC Ceremony at HRC

As we observed a national day of remembrance for all Australians and New Zealanders who have served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations, we specifically remembered our club members who sacrificed and gave service, by holding the annual HRC ANZAC ceremony and club row on Sunday 27th April.

ANZAC Races

Sunday, April 27th marked a special day for HRC as we gathered for our annual ANZAC club races and service, and the christening of the newest addition to the fleet. The day kicked off with our traditional club races. The assembled rowers demonstrated impressive skill and determination, with over 50 participants joining across a range of sweep and scull boat classes and with visitors from both Power House RC and Wentworth RC. The day's fastest crew was an imperious 4X- stroked by none other than champion rower and Big-V Rep Shane O'Connor-Smith. But of course, the real win was seeing members row in scratch combinations in such fine form.

HRC was pleased to be joined by rowers from Power house and wentworth

rowers and coxes came together in scratch crews to row in fine form

ANZAC Procession and Service

Following the races, we gathered for a procession to HRC's war memorial, ably led by piper Nick Buckley (son of member Sandra). The service that followed was a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by all service members during and since the Great War, notably those from HRC who fought and fell in those conflicts, and whose names can be found inscribed on the memorial. A special thank you to Jim Dewar (honorary member and Vietnam veteran) for leading us in our reflection. A wreath was jointly laid by the President and Club Secretary Frances Graham, who had kindly also prepared such a fitting wreath for the occasion. Members were then invited to lay their own individual poppies on the cenotaph in the memory of those who made the greatest sacrifice.

A special thank you to Jim Dewar - honorary member and Vietnam veteran - for leading us in our reflection

The procession was led by talented old scotch piper Nick Buckley - son of member Sandra. The club’s memorial was erected in October 1919 to honour our fallen WW1 members, and is one of the first and oldest Anzac memorials in Australia.

Naming of the Ned Coleman 2X

On such an important day in the HRC calendar, it seemed appropriate to christen the newest addition to the fleet, a Filippi racing 2X (rated 65-75kg). This boat will provide an option for our elite female and lightweight athletes to compete in, following on from the summer's success in the NSW championships and in line with the club's ambitions. In naming this boat, the club captain and committee sought to draw on the club's (relatively recent) history of success at a national level, and one athlete stood out: Ned Coleman. For those who have joined HRC in the last 10 years, a brief summary of Ned's accolades includes:

Bronze at 2016 Nationals MU192X
Silver at 2016 Nationals MU194X
Silver at 2015 Nationals MU192X
Gold at 2014 Nationals MU174X+
Silver at 2014 Nationals MU172X

After HRC, Ned competed with MUBC whilst coaching juniors at Hawthorn and going on to more successes. Ned was the first of several talented home-grown rowers from the club's junior program and neighbouring public schools. Subsequent athletes you will be familiar with include Tristan Krstevski (Club Captain), Charlie Watts (Banks, and HRC club coach), Jackson Morish (Mercs, and HRC club coach), and Max Currie (HRC committee & coach). It was fantastic that Ned could join us all the way from Swan Hill, and be honored with his family including sister Annie and mother Josie (also great contributors to Victorian rowing) in the audience. Josie was instrumental in the HRC/Balwyn High School partnership's inception, as well as the Girl's Head of the River.

Ned was the first of several talented home-grown rowers from the club's junior program which continues successfully to this day

Morning Tea

All that was left then to do was enjoy the fine spread of treats provided by members, and assembled and presented by the ever-generous-with-their-time Robyn Blake and Frances. Thank you to all of those who joined us for this important tradition, and I hope to continue to see strong turnouts at our social club racing in the coming months. All are welcome, and we try to mix up the crews so that everyone from Learn to Row to our Youth Elites can experience the intensity of a good race but also the camaraderie of HRC.

President, Hawthorn Rowing Club

Winter Rowing

If you plan on rowing early in the morning or past 5pm, please make sure you have lights on your boat. No lights, no row!

Working Bee - Sunday 18 May at 10.30am

May is 'maintenance month' and there are plenty of jobs we would welcome the assistance of our members with please. Jobs will range from simple repairs/maintenance of boats e.g. replacing wheels on seats, through to cleaning of guttering (where it is accessible and safe to do so).  We will assign jobs on the day so please come prepared i.e. it is recommended that you bring as a minimum some gloves and some may like to bring gardening or maintenance tools. Join us at 10:30 after Rowing Development for some hard work, some fun and some morning tea - please bring a plate to share.

Trivia Night - Friday 23 May 7pm

This is an opportunity to grab your oar-some friends (tables of 8) and join us as we navigate through an evening of brain-teasing questions and good times to be led by our very own trivia maestro JB. Don't miss the boat on what promises to be an enjoyable fun-filled evening. Future emails to follow will provide a run-down for the evening but in the meantime please mark this event in your diaries.

Classes of Rowing Boats

For those who are new to rowing, it can be confusing trying to understand all the different boat class symbols at regattas. So we asked Guy Besley, HRC’s resident coxing expert, for a quick guide.

Rowing boats come in various types, each designed for specific purposes and conditions. Here are some of the different types of rowing boats:

  1. Single Scull (1x): A single scull is a narrow, long boat designed for one rower who uses two oars, one in each hand. This type of boat is used for competitive rowing and provides the rower with full control over the boat’s direction. A Single scull can be either a racing hull or a tub hull the tub is designed for novice rowers as it is wider and easier to sit up. Its believed that single sculling is a great way for rowers to gain balance and a true understanding about making a boat move through the water. Thee is nowhere to hide on race day either, you are 100% accountable.

  2. Double Scull (2x): Similar to the single scull, a double scull is designed for two rowers who each use one oar. It is often used in competitive rowing events, and the coordination between the two rowers is crucial for success.

  3. Pair (2+/-), sweep rowing: A pair is a rowing boat for two rowers who each use one oar. A pair can be either coxed or un-coxed, although it is very rare to see a cox in a pair these days except in tubs training novices. It requires teamwork and synchronization between the rowers. Pairs are often used in competitive rowing. A pair is considered one of the most challenging and technical boats to row.

  4. Four (4+/-) sweep rowing: A four is a boat for four rowers who each use one oar. There are two types of fours: coxless fours (without a coxswain) and coxed fours (with a coxswain who steers and directs the crew). Fours are commonly used in both competitive rowing and recreational rowing.

  5. Quad Scull (4x+/-): Probably my favorite boat class to row. A quad scull is same as a double scull except with four rowers, it maybe coxed (usually with the coxswain sitting in the bow, or uncoxed.

  6. Eight (8+): An eight is a large rowing boat for eight rowers who each use one oar. It also has a coxswain who provides direction and commands. Eights are commonly used in competitive rowing, particularly in team rowing events like eights races and regattas.

  7. Coastal Rowing Boats (various classes): Coastal rowing boats have grown in popularity through Europe over the last few years, in my view they will explode in Australia as soon as someone gets behind it and promotes. The class is ideal for Australian conditions and allows Surf rowers the opportunity to adapt to a truly international class of rowing whilst also allowing an opportunity for older rowers to take on new challenges and experiences. Very similar to the explosion of growth in Trail running, Gravel Riding and Of Road Triathlons. Basically they are a bigger boat, much more stable and come in single scull, double scull and coxed quad sculls. Watch this space!!!!

  8. Adaptive Rowing Boats: These rowing boats are modified to accommodate individuals with disabilities, allowing them to participate in the sport of rowing. Adaptations can include specialized seats, supports, or equipment to suit the needs of the rower.

Its also worth noting all classes have male or female divisions and many also have mixed divisions, meaning half women and half men.

These are just a few examples of the various types of rowing boats available. The choice of boat depends on factors such as the intended use, the number of rowers, the water conditions, and personal preferences, mainly focused on whether your training, racing or just having some fun.

Also note that on the event schedules, it may all look a little confusing; below is a guide to help you navigate through.

Head of the Yarra 2025

22nd November - with just under 7 months before this year’s Head of the Yarra it’s time for a club update.

Entries for interstate and overseas crews opened in April and have reached their cap of 200 boats.  A great mix of crews from across Australia and New Zealand.  Victorian crew entries will open on 4th August and their cap of 80 will fill quickly.  So, we are all set for a large entry on Saturday 22nd November.

Orange army

The Orange Army of volunteers is an essential ingredient of HOTY.  There are jobs for club members, friends and mates from other clubs.  It’s a lot of fun and competitors and spectators are always grateful and impressed - so your help will make a big difference! Please ensure you get your name down via our HOTY volunteer site - Click Here

hoty sponsors

Sponsors - we need your help to bring them on board.

The Head of the Yarra relies on the financial and in-kind support of sponsors, some of whom have been long term and close associates (if not, members) of the club.  We are deeply indebted to them and greatly appreciative of their consistent support.

We want to ask our HRC member base if they have an association with any organisation that could be a potential sponsor for the 2025 Head of the Yarra event?  It might be a business you work in, one you know closely, or an organisation to which you can make a first hand introduction.  We are seeking sponsorship outcomes that add positively to the sponsor, HRC and to the race participants experience through effective activation at the event.

Simon Watts is our sponsor contact and he’d be appreciative of any first-hand leads.  Not so much a “have you thought of…?” but “I can introduce you to…” type of leads and contacts.

Simon can be reached on email at swatts792@gmail.com or call 0418 791 679

Historic medal design

What’s new in 2025?

Back by popular demand! We’ve reverted to the “old club” medal design. Sometimes tradition is best.

We hope you love it too even if club members don’t get to win one!

orphans, coxes and boat hire

Orphans, coxes and boat hire are all part of the HOTY service.

We receive regular requests, and we connect people in order to place orphan rowers, find and place coxes, and help with boat hire.  It’s a self-help Facebook group that you can reach by Clicking Here

HOTY Podcasts

How lucky are we to have Guy Besley at HRC and his wonderful Coxswain’s Journey podcasts on Spotify and Facebook.  Guy has volunteered to put together some podcasts in the lead up to HOTY to help crews prepare for what is a hugely challenging physical and tactical 8km race.  It’s more than just fitness.  Diet, clever coxing and a deliberate prep routine will see you through.  Miss some of these ingredients and you may not enjoy the event as much as you should.  It’s all part of our safety plan for 2025.

quality beer with a label and a look that your friends will love

Last drinks for HOTY24!

Now you all know that there are still about 30 slabs of the Crew Brew that need drinking. The notice is on the wall at the club. $50 on the Tyro machine on the bar.  Just do it!

hoty 2025 will be amazing with your help!

That’s it for the HOTY25 update.

Australian Rowing Championships 23-30th March

Congratulations to our youth squad who competed at the magnificent Lake Barrington in Tasmania. Accompanying the scenic views, was action packed rowing by the squad. This has been the first all-Hawthorn crew who has medalled at the National Championships for at least the 50 years. On top of that, Max was apart of the winning eight in the Interstate Regatta (which is ran concurrent with the National Championships) to bring the Noel Wilkinson trophy back to Victoria! Hopefully its the first of many more Hawthorn medals!

Head of the Yarra 2024

In a day that will be remembered for extreme heat and the cancellation of a few final events to allow us to deal with a mounting number of heat stressed rowers, the HRC’s HOTY team delivered another exceptional event.  From the Melbourne start team led by Catherine, our marshals along the 8 kilometre course led by Linda, our Hawthorn park team with Ruth on landing, Nichola on the bar, Tiffany on soft drinks, Vic and Tristan on the water, Jim’s timing team, Steve on racks, Anna and Kate on volunteer food, Linda with umpires, Robyn on medals, Richard on signs and money, Chris and Julie on front of house, Pat,  Sue and Richard on AV, Ollie snapping, Grace and Julie W on Socials, Simon and Melissa juggling many issues and I could keep going. Not forgetting Belinda and Fiona who are our ninja’s of the event - silently delivering our very time consuming permits while the rest of us have no clue they are there! And a shout out to Natasha who like Belinda and Fiona silently and efficiently put together the entire volunteer team.

And don’t forget our wonderful sponsors and supporters with Sykes, RivalKit, Bakers Delight, Prime Value, Diggin’ in the Cellars, Bendigo Bank, Regatta Solutions, Rowing Victoria, City of Boroondara, Parks Victoria, Life Saving Victoria and the City of Melbourne.

Get the picture? It was a HRC family and friends affair with everyone in and doing their bit.  So many of our young members (shout out to Max) and their mates gave us their energy and in turn learnt what a great event our club has created since inception in 1957. For a group that does not rehearse, we come together one day a year and sync like a bunch of pro’s.  It is a credit to the club and has given HOTY an international reputation as one of the big three head races in the world, and a deserved reputation within Australia and NZ as the go to event. Go orange army!
— Rob Perkins, Chair HOTY Committee

RV Schoolboys Regatta

Great job to the junior boys quad who took out second in the Year 8 first division. To put it into perspective, there were 134 year 8 crews!

And no, it was not sunny on the day…

Carrum Regatta

Unfortunately no photos for this regatta (at least that I have on hand at the time of writing) but fantastic results against the typical bipolar Melbourne weather which was changing all day long! We came home with 7 golds, 7 silvers, 5 bronze at the end of the day. Really fabulous results!

Big thanks to Max, Bill and Mark for towing. Congrats on Jack, John and Emmet on their first regatta as well.

Rob will be assisted by long term HOTY committee members Pat Freeland-Small, Vic Sibilin, Belinda Goglia, Andrew Vogan and Robyn Blake to hit the ground running for the 2024 event.

“It’s not all hard work contributing to the committee, the concept of enjoyment and fun is an important part of delivering a time honoured event that is iconic in Australian rowing. Let our new Chairman Rob Perkins know if you would like to be part of the planning team.

Head of the Yarra entry will open earlier this year with crew bookings & payments from April 4th.

Call for members to assist in 24 HOTY Planning.

The annual Head of the Yarra is Hawthorn Rowing Club’s rowing showcase, an event that forms a major part of funding of our rowing programs, and helps to keep our membership fees low. As such, it is a requirement of club membership that all members are actively involved in the running of the event to ensure its continued success.

Each year, a small group of club members with a range of experience and a collective knowledge passed down through the club, meets once a month to report progress on the collective range of activities that are required to plan and manage the event.

If you have some skills in event style programs, people management, promotion, communications or commerce that you feel may assist please put your hand up to join this group and to become part of the planning team. Come along to the first planning meeting to see what our plans are and to get to know the team.

Safety and Courtesy to fellow members

When using club equipment please be mindful of returning all boats & oars to their designated racks with equipment left in good repair and as you found it, ready for use by the next crew. No club oar sets or boats are to have settings changed without first seeking permission from Captain or Vice Captain. If you want personal settings on equipment either purchase your own or seek to have a boat or set of oars dedicated to your training race crews by the Captain. Too often crews are finding oar sleeve lengths, buttons or gate-height settings have been randomly changed which compromises their row.

Club Speed Boat Use. Club Speedboats are an important part of coaching and safety equipment. Recently with all good intentions, they have been used for river cleanup duties. This however has caused some damage of steering cables and compromised training programs. For this reason please note that club speedboats are only to be used for coaching or on-water safety during rowing programs.

July '23 Bow Ball Bulletin

Club update following July 23 Committee meeting.

HRC’s New Race Kit - Order before August 4th.

A new club race strip for Hawthorn has been approved by Rowing Australia for implementation at the start of the 23/24 race season.

All HRC members wishing to race this season will need to order new kit. To facilitate, we have a new online webstore with a fabulous range of gear available for purchase through our new supplier Rival Kit.

The new design is in keeping with the visual historical look, but differs in that a three white stripe bodice plate, front and back, is placed on a blue base layer, so the full hoops are gone.

We are moving away from white base layer to blue as more sunscreen friendly and flattering to the master’s rower physique. Blue Caps and Blue under garments are the new approved look.

A bulk order, delivered to clubhouse, will be available over the next two weeks saving shipping costs for all who participate. Use the code HAWTHORNBULK on checkout to save shipping costs on all orders on or before August 4th.

Click the link below to progress your order.

Club AGM - Sunday July 30th.

The club’s AGM will be held on Sunday 30th July at 11.00am preceded by club races at 9.00 am. We’d like to see a strong turn-up from the membership.

At the meeting, the 22/23 committee will be dissolved with all positions up for renomination. Treasurer and Secretary roles will become vacant with current incumbents not renominating. Those with financial skills or those with organisational skills are asked to consider nomination for one of these two roles which are part of the club executive group.

There are also 3 General committee positions to fill with responsibilities as; 1. Membership, 2. Social, and 3. House (Clubhouse maintenance).

Committee nomination forms are available here.

The agenda and Annual report will be circulated in due course.

Those of you who would like to take part in club races at 9.00 am please click on photo above to make a booking.

A number of HRC male and female masters members are in training for the World Rowing Masters in September 2024 and have committed with their accomodation booked already.

HRC Staging

We are hopeful of having our rowing club back in action at the Hawthorn site by April 3rd.

The crane barge is back on site and works have recommenced. The Concrete forecourt was completed on March7th.

The final stages of works over next few weeks involves; the installation of piles and the 6 upright supports by 20th March, delivery of the pontoons by March 24th and connection and installation of the floating pontoons by April 3rd.

The club will continue to operate from Powerhouse RC with limited fleet until works are complete.

Be Neat Please

Please remember we are guests at Powerhouse so keep the area around our trailer neat and pack up all equipment after use.

HOTY 2023

With Creswick Street reopened and the new HRC ramp to be completed soon, the 2023 Head of the Yarra scheduled for Saturday November 25th will likely be our biggest ever event.

Returning after a 4 year hiatus due to pandemic and floods, we will need all hands on deck to ensure this major fundraiser helps reinvigorate our club. If you are able to assist or would like to join the HOTY organising committee, please contact the race Secretary Penny Vogan.

Click the link below to view the 2023 race promo video or to share it with your colleagues.

October '22 Bow Ball Bulletin

Club update following October ‘22 Committee meeting.

HRC Staging Update

Andrew Vogan who met with Council and contractors on site on Thursday 20th October has provided this update.

Plans for the permanent staging are being reworked but a temporary solution will be trialled to facilitate water access for clubs at Hawthorn within the next few weeks.

There will be two temporary landings:

First, nearest the bank, a 55m x 2m deck 450mm above the water (currently at Hawthorn ) will be anchored to a concrete apron in place of the old bitumen apron.

A second temporary floating deck will be attached to the first with a step down. It is 30m x 1.8m and is 300mm above water. Trials for the temporary landing will include boat launch and retrieve, plus seeing if we can lower the second landing to get it closer to the water.

This will likely be the interim solution for the summer season.

Re the Permanent landing:

The Permanent landing has required some redesign.

The rock in the river was harder than the geological bore surveys.

Timeframes for the permanent landing are yet to be confirmed.

So in the interim, hopefully only for the next few weeks, it's still on-water rowing from Powerhouse.

The HRC Clubhouse can still be accessed with your fob for gym and ergo use.

Ensure fleet bookings are made via bookings system

Captain’s Update

Update from HRC Captain Jackie Bondell

I hope you are well and are enjoying the spring sun this week even though the water is not conducive to rowing. Here are some updates for your attention:

WATER CONDITIONS: Unfortunately the rains have put a damper on many peoples' rowing plans over the last week. Thanks to everyone for following advice and training on land until the water is safe for rowing. With more rain expected later this week, we will continue to monitor conditions and advise accordingly. The most timely updates and images/video of conditions are provided on the HRC Hub WhatsApp group. Reach out if you want to be added to this group.

SPRING REGATTAS: Other casualties of the rain were the Bendigo Sprints Regatta and the Head of the Goulburn. The Head of the Goulburn is working with RV to reschedule and I will inform you of plans to reschedule. The next regatta on the HRC schedule is the Melbourne Head on the 19th of November. An EOI for this regatta will follow in due course.

AIRC: Been training on the ergo? The Australian Indoor Rowing Championships is a week and a half away. This year they are providing a window over which you can submit your results. Been training with a group? There are also relay races, which are a fun-ish way to erg with friends! Entries close on Sunday. Enter here.

ERGOS FOR BEGINNERS: On Sunday 23rd at 9am October Jackie will host a one-hour session for HRC beginner rowers (those who have done learn-to-row in the last year or so) on getting to know the ergo. We will get to know the erg and cover basic technique and how it carries to the boat. The goal is to help our newer members feel comfortable using the club ergos as an option to complement their training. If interested, complete this form. For other members planning to train on land on Sunday, please work around this 9-10 time slot.

JUNIOR TRAINING SCHEDULE: Please note the HRC juniors train after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. When planning your training, please work around these times.

MELBOURNE ARGONAUTS BALL: On the 4th of November our friends at the Melbourne Argonauts are hosting the Queer Rowing Club Ball - Sparkle with Pride, bringing together the LGBTQIA+ and sporting communities for an evening of celebration and new connections. More info and tickets are here. Use the code FRIENDSOFARGOS for a discount.

TRAILER MAINTENANCE: The HRC trailer is having its annual maintenance on Monday the 24th of October at 7 am. This may slightly impact access from our racks to the landing at PHRC for a short time.

Feel free to reach out with questions or concerns.

Clubhouse & Remote Training Options

With staging out of action there are still the following club activities to keep up your training:-

Postponed

The HOTY Committee of the Hawthorn Rowing Club has decided to cancel the 2022 Head of the Yarra scheduled for 26th November 2022. All entries will lapse.

We are planning to run a late season HOTY in April 2023, depending on the completion of the new ramp, on agreement with Rowing Victoria, and on gaining permits. We intend to run a full scale regatta (265 boats), with the usual post finish entertainment.

September '22 Bow Ball Bulletin

Club update following September ‘22 Committee meeting.

Next Bendigo

Jackie advises next outing for Hawthorn is the Bendigo Sprints Regatta on the 15th of October. <BENDIGO REGATTA DETAILS>

This regatta is appropriate for all levels and is an excellent regatta for beginners. The short distance will allow for multiple races. This is a really fun regatta and an excellent opportunity to allow our membership to try a lot of different races.

Please respond to Jackie by completing this EOI to provide your interest. If you are interested in rowing but haven't been on the water over the winter, no worries! Let Jackie know and she will find some opportunities to support your transition back onto the water. We may have to be flexible while we wait for the landing.

Boat Safety Reminder

A recent collision by a Hawthorn sculler is a timely reminder about boat safety. As the weather warms and there are more users on the river, please ensure you are paying careful attention while rowing and follow all river rules. Additionally, the spring weather can be unpredictable, so check the weather forecast before starting your row.

Rowing Development

HRC will get Rowing Development up and running as soon as we have access to the new landing. Jackie is looking to organise some land based sessions to assist prior to rowers returning to the water

New Staging

Moderate flooding of the Yarra over recent weeks has plagued progress on the delivery of our new staging. The retaining wall is in place but work still needs to be done to insert the 6 upright pillars prior to the floating staging being connected.

Works are expected to be completed in first week of October. Captain advises rowing may resume from the site around October 11th.

In the meantime a workable fleet is available for use from temporary facilities at PowerHouse.

Clubhouse can still be accessed with your fob for gym and ergo use.

Ensure fleet bookings are made via bookings system
