Hawthorn Rowing Club’s Head of the Yarra
28th November. HRC NEEDS YOU!
HRC NEEDS YOU!!
The Head of the Yarra 8s Regatta is the annual fundraiser for Hawthorn Rowing Club. This is how we generate funds for new boats and other club expenses.
We need all club members to help out, either on the day or prior to the event. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Volunteers will be provided with lunch on the day.
Below is a list of volunteer roles.
Please reply to this call out and let me know your preferred role. Below is a list of roles to choose from.
Bar staff - must have Responsible Serving of Alcohol certification
Landing/ Guiding boats - help crews off the water/ walk crews up to the racking area (this year, volunteers on the landing will do a mix of boat landing assistance and walking)
Umpires - monitor various locations along the river
Soft drink stall - sell soft drinks
Pack up crew - pack up tents, put away signs, picking up rubbish at the end of the day - either city end 2.30pm, or Hawthorn end 4.00pm, or both!
Start hub city - assist with traffic management, merchandise stall, staging marshalls
Set up crew - put signs out at Hawthorn Rowing Club, accompany trailer to city start hub with tent and bins early Sat morning, set up tent
Boat Parking supervision - monitor the boat trailer parking in Creswick St and ensure crews do not crowd the area or move trailers prior to departure time
Social media - create and post content on the day for HOTY social media (e.g., interview people)
T-Shirt distribution - hand out T-shirt packs to crews on the day
Racks - direct crews to appropriate boat placements on the racks post-race (most suited to tall strong people as some crews may need assistance with lifting)
We also have pre-event roles so if you are unavailable on the 28th, please let me know and I can offer other volunteer opportunities!
If there is any other assistance you can provide, or if you have any questions, please contact me.
Many thanks,
Natasha Kinsman

From the President’s Desk
Welcome to this month's instalment from the President for the Bowball, a publication that continues to grow in stature with each edition. (The Bowball that is, not my bit!).
Well, the Head of the Yarra is nearly upon us, and the two working bees that precede it are just around the corner. This year has the potential to be the biggest HOTY so far, as Rob Perkins and his focused and dedicated team continue to impress. I remind members, every member, that when Natasha calls for volunteers, she is being polite - "Volunteering" for the Head of the Yarra is actually a condition of your membership, as is showing up at working bees when they are organized. So if you have not yet responded to Natasha, or signed up for a specific job, please do so ASAP. With the working bees, please make sure you get to at least one of the two scheduled in November, both if you can manage it.
Damage to our fleet continues to be problematic at a few levels. If a boat is damaged, it must, let me say that again, IT MUST be reported to the Captain, as soon as it occurs. This has not happened on numerous occasions, and it is simply not good enough. Tristan, quite rightly, gets annoyed/incensed/angry about this at regular intervals. I remind members that technically, if a boat is damaged and the damage is NOT reported immediately to the Captain, the party involved can be held liable for the total cost of repairs.
But let's look at this problem from another angle: What happens when a boat is damaged?
1) It is out of service for the time it takes to be repaired, and is unavailble for OTHER members to use.
2) If the damage is severe enough, the repairs need to be done externally, increasing the time the boat is out of service, and increasing the cost to the club, and the inconvenience to OTHER members.
3) We are extremely fortunate to have a very small number of members who can repair many of the types of damage that seem to occur to our fleet quite regularly. They volunteer their time to do this. So when you bend a fin or a rudder, or scratch or dent the hull of a boat, or have an "incident" with another boat, spare a thought for the fact that you will likely be imposing on ANOTHER MEMBER to fix it for you.
Please think about this when you are using club resources.
And even more to the point, let us all lift our game when it comes to caring for our fleet:
Take greater care taking boats out of the shed and returning them to the rack.
Take greater care launching and retrieving boats from the landing.
Stay on the correct side of the river!
If you see an issue with a coxless boat, call out.
If conditions are marginal on the river - do an erg instead!
And if something does happen, let Tristan know straight away.
To finish on a lighter note, the club will be hosting a "Thank You" barbeque, the weekend following HOTY on December 4 at 5:30 at the club. It should be epic. Or fun at the very least. Details have been circulated, I look forward to seeing and thanking you all then.
Until then, row fast, row well, and row safe.
Cheers,
Bill Olayos,
HRC President.

John Stansfield’s Alfa Romeo Montreal.
I found the Alfa on car sales.com.au. I spoke with the owner for a year or so, who wasn’t going to sell and then we negotiated a deal.
Don’t have much history but owned by this owner for many years, Australian delivered. His 13th Montreal.
The car was in good running order but many things have been done.
My mechanics did the work. It shares quite a few parts with other Alfa models.
The car is covered and garaged in a secure undercover car park.
It has a lovely small V8 and a 5 speed gearbox, great to drive in the Dandenongs or Yarra Valley, maybe to an Italian restaurant!
People love Alfa’s and there aren’t many of these around so it attracts attention!
The music is the car and every drive is a special memory!

Or should we say… Most Valuable and Versatile Club Member?
Robyn Blake is the very definition of a quiet achiever. Whether she’s serving on the Committee, volunteering to document our Club’s 150-year history, or competing on the water, Robyn’s contribution to Hawthorn Rowing Club is nothing short of remarkable.
A finalist for Rowing Victoria’s Most Successful Female Coxswain 2025/26, a medallist at the Australian Masters Rowing Championships, and once again a competitor on the world stage at the World Masters Rowing Championships, Robyn’s achievements speak for themselves.
But her talents don’t stop at the water’s edge! She’s also our resident Tetris champion, somehow managing to stack riggers into the trailer with extraordinary precision!
Warm, friendly and always willing to lend a hand, (or even lend her private oars last Saturday), Robyn combines a generous club spirit with a fiercely competitive streak.
A quiet achiever, a fierce competitor and an absolute club treasure. Congratulations, Robyn on being Hawthorn Rowing Club’s ‘Member of the Month’!

The bend from Morrell Street Bridge.
Jobs for the girls and jobs for the boys.
The Melbourne Symphony orchestra practices daily and as a result performs on-song every time it plays. Our HOTY volunteers come together one day a year and we rely upon them to also be “on-song”. It is a big ask.
Fortunately, we are capably led by a large core of highly experienced long-serving members who know their stuff. However, in this day and age it is no longer sufficient to go on “muscle memory” and we have, through Sue Lilly’s leadership, been active in documenting the roles and responsibilities across the 30 areas of significant responsibility within the HOTY org structure.
It has been a long-held expectation that all members make themselves available on the day of HOTY or contribute towards the event at some point during the year - prepping the club house before the event and packing t-shirts are examples of two essential activities that occur before the day.
The HOTY committee is a group of around 12 members who meet monthly throughout the year starting in December, and fortnightly as the event approaches. They take the decisions that ultimately deliver the event year-on-year.
Post HOTY debrief December 2025
A hallmark of the event is that it is club member driven. We need around 150 plus members on the day. With a membership of around 200 this means that we are reliant on a 75% turnout, or the hard-won reputation of HOTY as an efficient and safe volunteer-driven event is jeopardised.

If you have read this far and are not a HOTY volunteer, please drop an email to our wonderful volunteer co-ordinator Natasha Kinsman and she will work with you to find you a great job on the day.

It is a huge thrill to be part of this member driven event. It makes you proud to be a Hawthorn Rowing Club member and I look forward to seeing the HOTY team deliver another fabulous HOTY in 2026!

Volunteer Thank You & Awards Night – Friday 4 December, Hawthorn Rowing Club
Book it in now on Acuity Scheduling!
Dear Hawthorn Rowing Club members,
On Friday 4 December at 5:30 pm, the club is firing up a spit roast to thank our Head of the Yarra (HOTY) volunteers and to celebrate the previous season. Slow-roasted meat and vegetarian options, FREE for members and for parents of junior and youth members.
Book your place on Acuity [CLICK HERE and go to 4. Events and Functions] by Friday 13 November to secure your place! Guests of members are very welcome to join the feast for a small cash contribution of $15, payable to Melissa on the night.
It’s our way of saying a big thank you to everyone who gave their time to volunteer for the club this year, particularly at this year’s Head of the Yarra. Your efforts make the running of the club and the regatta possible, and there’s no better way to show our appreciation than a BBQ on the terrace. Whilst the spit turns, we’ll also recognise our club award winners for the previous season, so come along and join the celebrations.
To round out the spread, we’d love attendees to bring a salad or dessert to share. Club member Melissa Watts will be in contact to coordinate this when you sign up.
Drinks will be available at usual bar prices.
See you there for a relaxed evening of great food, good company and well-deserved celebration!
And if you haven't yet signed up to volunteer at HOTY on Saturday 28 November, CLICK HERE to sign up.

Some rowers like to brag
They can really make you mad
others make you want to swear and curse
But when the Yarra Head is run
we all know who gets it done
so this might make your day a bit more fun ……
Vol-un-teers look better than the crews (whistle)
Orange shirts look good on all of youse (whistle)
The crews look kinda tired
But don't let it be forgotten
They must follow orders instantly
They might never get a beer
If they want to come back here next year
They’d better grovel like their life depends on it
so…
Vol-un-teers look better than the crews (whistle)
Orange t-shirts stand out on the News (whistle)
Orders barked by volunteers
Have reduced grown men to tears
But the women crews just glare and stare a bit
The volunteers are just unfazed
And in fact in many ways
They really don’t give a flying sh#t ….
so…
Vol-un-teers look better than the crews (whistle)
Orange shirts look good on all of youse (whistle)
And when the day is done
And the rowers have all gone
The volunteers might have a cleansing ale
And laugh at what they saw
'Cause its clears to one and all
The volunteers row better than those crews …..
and …...
Vol-un-teers look better than the crews (whistle)
Orange shirts look good on all of youse (whistle)
Some coxes like to go
Around Big Bend real slow,
Others like to go straight up the guts.
But up the guts is nuts
For canny coxes who all know
That cutting corners is the quickest way back home!
so…
Vol-un-teers look better than the crews (whistle)
Orange shirts look good on all of youse (whistle)
fade to obscurity ……...
This could be a secret code for volunteers - just whistle it all day!

The Art of Quiet Rest - Alpaca Duvet
Description: Warmth without overheating | Farmer-owned
There is a quiet pleasure in coming home after a morning on the water—and, at day’s end, settling beneath a duvet that feels just right.
Twenty years ago, Ian and Angela settled among the rolling green pastures of country Victoria, Australia, where they raised their young family and devoted themselves to breeding alpacas, becoming one of Australia's leading alpaca breeders. Today, as proud grandparents, they continue that journey by sharing the quiet luxury of alpaca fibre and its many natural qualities with the world—an extraordinary fibre once reserved for royalty and the elite. Every Uneke® Duvet begins with meticulously hand-selected alpaca fibre, thoughtfully crafted into an enduring expression of nature's finest comfort.

Racing – Bendigo Sprint Regatta
Whilst not a high-performance regatta key for our performance goals this season the Youthies jumped at the chance to compete at the Bendigo Sprint Regatta. It was an opportunity to celebrate the inclusive and fun culture of the wider HRC community and enjoy a regatta where it was a club member's first ever competition race on the same day as another club member’s first race after world champs (Max!). The Youthies are proud to be a part of a club environment with such a wide range of rowing experiences.
Here are the highlights:
- A-B quad scull winners, second place HRC juniors.
- A-B double winners Max and Davyd, Second Archie and Dan, third Luca and Angus
- Mixed Quad winners: D. Stute [HAWTH], M. Currie [HAWTH], M. Harrison [MUBC], N. Preston [HAWTH], Cox: M. Watt
- Mixed double winners, Mia (MUBC athlete and HRC JDP director) and Max
- Jason Liu – First ever regatta after learning to row 6 months ago. Jason made the final in the C grade quad scull. A very impressive achievement for someone’s first regatta. This result shows the strength of the HRC learn to row program, getting Muay Thai athletes to racing within half a year!

Time Trials – National Selection
October/November is an important part of the year for u23 high-performance athletes. Hawthorn youth rowers took to Carrum in the state-based NTT 1 where Dan Stute recorded the fastest time for a U23 rower and Archie Critchell recorded the third fastest time for a U23 rower. Max didn’t compete. Coming up in November is the National time trial 2. This is essential as a requirement for selection for the Australian team. The Youthies look forward for this opportunity to make HRC a top club in this time trial and demonstrate the strength of Tristan’s program. Alongside this a 5k ergo test is upcoming.

Trireme Olympias near Piraeus 2026.
Christoper Nolan’s film ‘The Odyssey’ has raised interest in vessels built as replicas of ancient seafaring hardware. But as rowers, we value strong attention to detail. We can’t ignore that Nolan chose a Scandinavian replica based on research of the Common Era rather than a pentekonter that would reflect the earlier Mycenean (Greek) times of Odysseus. But the designs of Greek vessels like the pentekonter and the trireme do not lend themselves to cinematography!
Your roving rower has just returned from holiday in Greece where opportunities abound to explore the high value placed by Greece on its naval tradition, including the role of rowers and oars.
Trireme Olympias publicity image (Hellenic Navy)
To open the 2004 Athens Olympics, the Olympic flame was transported in the Port of Piraeus by the trireme ‘Olympias’ - a commissioned vessel of the Hellenic Navy completed in 1987 based on archaeological research. With a crew of 170 rowers (positioned in 3 tiers) Olympias can travel at 9 knots and execute a 180 degree turn in under a minute. No wonder the Athenians defeated the Persians in the Battle if Salamis. See Olympias Tour Video for a tour. Today the navy displays it alongside decommissioned 20th century vessels in the port. On occasion, opportunities arise for volunteers to crew it.
The Argo, a pentekonter (50 oar) replica vessel, also advertises crewing opportunities. The Minoa, a reproduction 24 oar vessel, is displayed in Chania, Crete to showcase the archaeological research process concluded in 2004.

Tales of Y’Oar.
Rowing near Prince’s Bridge, 1914.
An article from Bell’s Life in Victoria, 5 July 1862.
AQUATICS. Melbourne Rowing Club.
This recently organised club, which dates its annual proceedings from the 1st of July, celebrated its inauguration last Tuesday, when it formally took possession of the new boat house at the foot of Princes Bridge, a description of which we gave in our last. The river presented quite a holiday aspect on the occasion, for, in addition to the bunting displayed by Edwards at his steamboat pier, the new boathouse boasted an excellent flagstaff, the stays of which were all dressed with flags, the most prominent being one on which was worked in white letters on a scarlet ground, ' The Melbourne Club.' But the most gorgeous affair was a flagstaff recently erected by the Elswick Club, comprising a lower mast, with crosstrees, a topmast, and gaff, all mounted with bunting, the most conspicuous of which, excepting the union jack, was a large flag with 'E' in the centre. This arrangement was in honour of the occasion and was viewed by the members of the new club as a compliment to them. Though the club can only claim for a few weeks to be possessed of one boat, the committee had arranged that the Albatross, a fine-oared boat formerly belonging to the Richmond Club, the Zephyr, the Oxford, and the Cambridge, should be available for members.
It was probably owing to the attraction of the ‘sham fight’ recorded elsewhere, that the members of the new club did not muster so strongly as was anticipated; those, however, who did put in an appearance were greeted, on launching their boat, with a cheer from several crews who had turned out, among which we observed three of the Ariels, the Leanders, the A'Becketts, the Magentas, and a few other boats with no distinctive colour. The whole flotilla was soon under way for Hawthorn, and in the pull up, many opportunities were afforded to those who were inclined to race, of proving their stamina and testing the speed of their boats. As a matter of course there were numerous spurts both up and down; the crews, in our opinion, who showed most 'continuance in well doing,' and who most pluckily persevered when pumped out, being the Leanders and the Magentas. We may conclude our notice bv stating that on arriving at the Hawthorn hotel ‘Success to the Melbourne Club' was drunk in bumpers, and that the whole party returned to town at an early hour, expressing themselves delighted with their mid-winter afternoon's pull.
